Daffodil Day 2016 – ‘Psalms, Hymns & Spiritual Songs’

On Monday, 7th March 2016 a packed Methodist Central Hall, Westminster celebrated ‘Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs’ for their 2016 Daffodil Day Rally.

The service was hosted by Deputy Superintendent, Revd Tony Miles and guests including Revd Steve Wild, (President of the Methodist Conference),  Dr Jill Barber, (Vice President of the Methodist Conference),  Pam Rhodes, (Presenter, Songs of Praise & Premier Christian Radio and the Lord Mayor of Westminster’s Locus Tenens, Honorary Alderman Anne Mallinson.   The Preacher was the Revd Dr Martyn Atkins, Team Leader and Superintendent Minister of Methodist Central Hall, Westminster and the soloists were Anna Cochrane and Anando Mukerjee.

Close to two thousand people from across the country packed into the Great Hall to sing hymns and songs from across the ages, including; ‘How Great Thou Art’, ‘Just as I am’ and ‘Bless the Lord, O my soul’ (10,000 reasons).  The hymns were accompanied by Director of Music, Gerard Brooks on the Great Hall Organ and musicians from Methodist Central Hall, Westminster.

In his address, Revd Dr Atkins said, ‘Hymns express what we feel, and believe, better than we could.’  Dr. Atkins recalled a trip to Cuba where in a village, in the middle of jungle he witnessed rebuilding homes, singing songs of praise to God.  The Revd Steve Wild in his address said, ‘Even in the most difficult times we can sing praises to our God.’  Pam Rhodes said, ‘ A Hymn is like spiritual First Aid, we can have a ready-made prayer in our pocket.’
